possession of the sea

In the 4th Century BC Alexander the Great asked a pirate what he meant by keeping possession of the sea. The pirate smiled, and responded: "What you mean by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, while you, who do it with a great fleet, are called emperor."

Possession of the Sea

Somali 'Pirates' – Where are they? What's happening to them?

There are several international armadas currently patrolling the waters off Somalia, they are intent on keeping international shipping lanes open around the Horn of Africa – and as a result there are currently at least 15 nations prosecuting approximately 900 Somali people with piracy.

Rather than prosecuting the companies dumping toxic waste off the coast of East Africa and rather than stopping the illegal fishing in Somali waters, the international community focuses on the individual Somali 'pirates.'

This blog is an attempt to not only keep track of the growing numbers of Somali who have been arrested and taken from their homeland, people who are now sitting in foreign lands waiting for foreign 'justice' or have been convicted and must now serve their time, but to also keep track of what is happening in the waters off the coast of Somalia.

It is hoped that the blog will raise interest in why so many Somali are now sitting in jails facing piracy charges - and who is trying to possess the seas of Somalia and why.
